Will Installing Solar Panels Void My Roof Warranty?

It’s a very common question we get from people when they are thinking about installing solar panels; will installing solar panels void my roof warranty?

The short answer is NO!

Installing solar panels on most roofs will not void the manufacturer warranty. Most roofing manufacturers these days want to be “solar friendly” and have written instructions on how to install PV solar panels on their roofing systems.

Some roofing manufacturers have even produced their own hardware to mount solar panels on their roofing systems!

Solar panel installations have exploded across the USA and roofing manufacturers are working to cooperate with solar installations.

What Roofing Manufacturers Say About Solar

Some roofing manufacturers are more friendly to solar than others. Roofing manufacturers like GAF and CertainTeed have started producing their own solar shingles and roofing systems.

Certain shingle manufacturers like Owens Corning and GAF have technical bulletins stating that installing solar panels on their shingles will NOT void the warranty. It is very helpful when manufacturers are this direct and have documentation to backup what they are saying.

Other manufacturers like Atlas and IKO also have documentation showing that installing PV solar will NOT void their warranties

The only shingle manufacturer that does not have any documentation online about installing solar is Tamko. I called a local rep for Tamko and discussed it with him. He said installing solar panels on a Tamko shingle will NOT void the warranty.

Solar panels can also be installed on tile, metal, stone coated steel, and some synthetics/composites.

Roof Workmanship Warranties And Solar

Installing solar panels on a roof will most likely void the workmanship warranty from the company who installed the roof.

Most roofing companies offer a workmanship warranty for 2-5 years after the roof is installed.

If your workmanship warranty has already expired you do not need to be concerned.

If it has not expired read through your warranty to see what it says.

Most solar installers offer what is called a “Roof Penetration Warranty.” This warranty covers the areas of the roof where solar is being installed.

Most of these roof penetration warranties are at least 10 years. In most cases, this is better than the workmanship warranty that came from the roofing company!

So yes, you will most likely lose the workmanship warranty on your roof. But, the new roof penetration warranty from the solar company should have at least 10 years of coverage which is probably better than what you had before!
