What Are Class 3 Impact Resistant Shingles?

People who live in areas with a lot of hail storms know how damaging a catastrophic weather event can be!

Large hail, hurricane force winds, tornadoes, and flooding can cause massive damage and losses to property, homes, and buildings.

For some people who live in areas with a lot of hail storms, they are faced with replacing their roof every few years. This becomes very costly and expensive.

We have a customer in Aurora, CO who has had us replace their roof 3 times since 2014! These poor home owners have got hit by 3 large hail storms in 8 years! June of 2014, June of 2018, and June of 2023.

The odd thing is that these homeowners moved into the home in 1995 when it was brand new… and never had a significant hail storm until 2014!

Impact Resistant Shingles Are a MUSt in hail prone areas!

People who live in areas that are prone to hail storms know that they may have to replace their roof multiple times while they live there because of hail storms.

This becomes expensive when you have to pay your deductible each time there is a storm!

Class 3 impact resistant shingles are a great option when replacing your roof because they are rated to withstand hail damage up to about 1.75 inches in diameter!

How are these shingles rated to withstand hail up to 1.75 inches?

The manufacturers have designed their impact resistant shingles with reinforced backings or rubberized materials.

These shingles are then sent to a lab where a ball bearing is dropped from 17 feet onto the shingle. In these tests the ball will not damage the shingle as it is simulating a hail stone impacting a shingle.

Brands of Class 3 IR Shingles

There are a few different shingle manufacturers that are currently producing class 3 shingles.

Atlas, CertainTeed, IKO, Malarkey, Owens Corning, and Tamko all produce class 3 impact resistant shingles.

These shingles come in many different colors to fit the needs of just about any project.

The other great thing about class 3 impact resistant shingles is that many insurance companies offer a discount on your premiums for having them installed!

The insurance company knows that you will be less likely to have to replace your roof with class 3 shingles installed, so they are willing to give you a discount.

Contact your insurance agent for more information on how much of a discount you could receive before installing the shingles!
