Should I Replace My Gutters When I get A New Roof?

For most people replacing your roof is something you don’t do very often. It’s something that you might do a few times in your lifetime.

When replacing your roof it’s important to consider whether or not your gutters need to be replaced.

Gutters are an important part of a roofing system on your home or building. Gutters divert rain and water away from the roof and foundation.

Gutters don’t always need to be replaced when you get a new roof. But, sometimes they do! There are a few important things to consider about your gutters when you are purchasing a new roof.

  1. Your Gutters Are Too Small –

    • Many roofing systems are designed with gutters that are too small for the roof areas that drain into them. The most common size of gutter is 5-inch and that is what is installed on most homes. If your roof pitch is 7/12 or more or if you have multiple roof sections draining into a gutter you should install a 6-inch gutter with oversized downspouts. This will greatly increase your drainage.

  2. Your Gutters Are Leaking –

    • As gutters age and deteriorate they will begin to leak along the seams, around the downspouts, and even along the gutters themselves. Older gutters might even rust or rot out. If your gutters are leaking NOW is the time to replace them!

  3. Your Gutters Are Sagging Or Are Dented –

    • Is there a low spot in your gutters? Is there a spot that got dented by a tree branch or falling debris? These are all things that can negatively affect the function of your gutter system.

  4. Your Gutters Overflow When It Rains –

    • If you notice that your gutters overflow when it rains it might mean that you need bigger gutters and downspouts! Oversized downspouts and larger gutters can improve your drainage!
